5 CYLINDER MERCEDES DIESEL (300) VERSUS 6 CYLINDER MERCEDES DIESEL (350)

I FOUND A BEAUTIFUL 1991 350SD THAT I AM THINKING OF BUYING FOR A VEG OIL CONVERSION, BUT NOT SURE IF THIS ENGINE IS A GOOD ENGINE TO CONVERT OR EVEN A GOOD ENGINE IN GENERAL. I KNOW THE 300SD AND 300D ENGINES ARE GREAT, BUT I HAVEN'T SEEN ONE OF THOSE IN AS NICE A CONDITION AS THIS 350SD. DPN'T WANT TO BUY THE 350SD JUST FOR ITS CONDITION IF THE ENGINE IS NOT A GREAT ENGINE.

THANKS FOR ANY INFO.

of course its a good engine

of course its a good engine its just overpowered for the vehicle its in and correspondingly less efficient. very big engine too i mean if you are going to put it in a bigger vehicle then yea super workhorse engine. in fact the 350 is not just bigger it has many advances (depending on the year) in fuel deelivery technology and the heads on those larger beasts is made of aluminum so they are not bulletproof anymore but they are relatively light and BADASS

Good God, what have you been

Good God, what have you been smoking? Do some reseach! The 90-91 6 cylinder 350 engines were handgrenades looking for a place to go off. Oil pumps failed ... actually, the mounting bolts vibrated loose (an easy fix) and starved the engines. Rods bent (common in about 30% of the cars) engines overheaded and cracked the aluminum heads(91) and so on. This is not to say they all had these problems but are you willing to bet 6 to 7 grand on those kind of odds? There was a recall and Mercedes did fix the problems. Go to a dealership with vin in hand and ask for a VMI (vehicle maintainence inquiry) and hope they give it to you. It will show if the recall is op4en or if the car has been repaired/modified. Hope this helps.

Seems rather harsh of a response.

What have you been smoking? In a word *** RUDE *** to put it nicely something starting with a D as in D*** would have been more accurate pal.

I have ben thinking of

I have ben thinking of getting a new car but my 1987 300td still runs so good. I have 168,000 miles on it and it still starts and run like it was new. The interior is real clean and I have yet to see another as nice or with as few miles as mine.
